Amber Guyer, a 31-year old white female and former Dallas, Texas police officer, was recently convicted of murder in the shooting death of 26-year old Botham Jean, a black man. Guyer was subsequently sentenced to ten years in prison. During the penalty phase of Guyer’s trial, Botham Jean’s younger brother, Brandt, shocked the courtroom–and the world–by verbally forgiving Guyer and hugging her (to the tears of many in the courtroom.) But for many people, including some who profess to be Christian, Brandt Jean’s offer of forgiveness was not a gesture to be lauded or applauded. Listen as Darrell and Omaha (Virgil Walker) discuss some of the reasons why Jean’s offer of forgiveness wasn’t “woke” enough for some professing Christians.

Excellent, excellent, excellent!!! This is probably one of the BEST podcasts from the seen I’ve listened to! Keep up the great, graced work, you guys!!
Darrell, I had the pleasure of meeting you when you were in the Twin Cities a few weeks ago. My friends and I sat right behind you and your wife. If you recall, I gave you some good natured grief about the Lambchop song. I also said that I listen to your podcasts while driving and some of them have made me nearly drive off the road. This latest podcast falls in that category.
You and Virgil did an outstanding job of explaining why the viewpoint of “woke” so-called Christians is so wrong. I found myself shouting – What Bible are these people reading? In my opinion, pre-1970’s, it was the church that saved and sustained the Black “community”. Now days I fear the woke church is helping to destroy it.
Keep up the good work. It is much needed and appreciated.
Your explanation of Colossians 3 forgiveness and the beauty of Brandt Jean ‘s act were powerful. The way you showed that the social justice people, Jemar Tisby in particular, are practicing another gospel was so clear. My pastor, Jason Meyer , of Bethlehem Baptist in Minneapolis, is joining Tisby on stage tomorrow night at Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist to promote racial justice. I fear that John Piper’s legacy will be ruined.
What an education in understanding some of the teaching/thinking of current culture. More important to me is how “forgiveness” applies to me and my attitude on my responsibility to forgive. Thank you. I need to examine more closely when I forgive am I doing so because I can’t exact revenge so in a sense am I just letting it go so I feel better.
